Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is taking bold steps to create greener, cleaner, and more sustainable campuses through the Green Campus Initiative. The program recently launched at Bird Street Campus in Central, where students, staff, and partners gathered to champion sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The initiative is designed to inspire students—especially those living in campus residences—to adopt sustainable practices and leave behind a legacy that future generations can build upon. Starting with North and South Campus, NMU aims to roll out projects that focus on:
Recycling programs to reduce waste and promote a circular economy.
Sustainable gardening to encourage food security and eco-friendly practices.
Community clean-ups in parks and open spaces surrounding the university.
Partnering for Impact
At the launch, NMU was joined by the Student Representative Alliance (SRA) from Central and WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa), who shared insights into the important environmental work they are driving.
SRA highlighted their ongoing clean-up campaigns, which take place every second-last Saturday of the month, and extended an invitation to NMU students to join in.
WESSA spoke about clearing alien plant species, which consume excessive water and disrupt local ecosystems, and encouraged students to adopt areas they can maintain.
These partnerships show that when communities work together, real environmental change is possible.
A Student-Driven Movement
According to Emmy from Waste Trade, one of the initiative’s key champions, the Green Campus Initiative is all about creating spaces where students can learn, live, and thrive in sustainable ways.
“The Green Campus Initiative is about encouraging students to make the university campuses greener, cleaner, and sustainable for all. Once the rollout is successful at North and South Campus, it will be spread across the rest of NMU and championed by students from the residential units.”
This student-led approach ensures that sustainability is not just a university mandate, but a culture—one that empowers young people to take ownership of their environment.
Planting Seeds for the Future
The Green Campus Initiative is more than just a project—it’s a movement toward environmental responsibility, collective action, and long-term change. By engaging in recycling, gardening, clean-ups, and alien plant clearing, NMU students are planting seeds of change that will grow into a healthier, more resilient environment for all.
Together, NMU, SRA, WESSA, and the student body are proving that small, consistent actions can create a big impact. The hope is simple but powerful: to live a lasting legacy for future generations.
